The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has strengthened its engagement with Chinese immigration authorities as both countries explore greater cooperation in migration management, intelligence sharing and border security.
The NIS participated in the Sub-Forum on Migration Management Cooperation held in Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province, China, from September 8 to 11, 2026.
The international gathering brought together more than 2,000 participants from 139 countries and organisations to discuss ways of improving international cooperation on migration management and responding to emerging transnational challenges.
As part of the programme, the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nanna Nandap, held a bilateral meeting with officials of China’s National Immigration Administration on September 9.
The meeting focused on issues of mutual interest and opportunities to strengthen cooperation between both institutions.
According to the NIS, discussions included technical exchanges, information sharing and capacity-building initiatives aimed at improving migration management.
The forum also featured country presentations on migration policies and efforts to strengthen cooperation among participating countries in tackling irregular migration and transnational organised crime.
Other sessions focused on smart digital services and administration for foreigners, as well as document verification, technology and intelligence sharing for more secure borders.
The NIS participated in the session on document verification and contributed to a roundtable discussion on Nigeria’s efforts to combat document fraud and the falsification of records.
The Service highlighted its ongoing efforts to strengthen document verification systems and improve border security.
The NIS said the engagement reflects its commitment to building stronger international partnerships and expanding technical and intelligence cooperation in the fight against cross-border crimes.
The Service also reaffirmed its commitment to promoting secure borders and more effective migration management through collaboration with international partners.
