Invest Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening trade and investment relations between Nigeria and Indonesia following the signing of memoranda of understanding (MoUs) between Nigerian and Indonesian companies at a bilateral business forum in Indonesia.

The initiative is aimed at improving commercial cooperation, opening new markets for businesses and creating opportunities for increased trade between the two countries under the framework of the D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation.

Speaking after the signing ceremony, Sheye Oyetade, Executive Director of Invest Nigeria, said the organisation participated in the engagement to advance its existing memorandum of understanding with the D-8 and promote smoother trade between Nigeria and Indonesia.

Oyetade explained that both countries belong to the D-8 economic cooperation bloc, which he said provides a platform for strengthening business relationships and expanding economic opportunities among member countries.

“Invest Nigeria has a great relationship with D-8, the Developing Eight countries. Nigeria and Indonesia are both part of the D-8 family of eight countries, well nine now with Azerbaijan joining. We came to service our memorandum of understanding with D-8 to make sure that trade is actually seamless between Nigeria and Indonesia,” he said.

Economic Reforms Expected to Support Cross-Border Trade

Oyetade said Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms have helped create opportunities for international business partnerships and cross-border investment.

According to him, the reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s administration are intended to improve the environment for trade and investment, allowing Nigerian businesses to explore opportunities beyond the domestic market.

“Because of the major reforms happening in Nigeria back at home under the Bola Tinubu administration, the economic reforms has actually opened the gateway for transnational trade and businesses to function properly. This is one of the ways by which that is being activated,” he added.

He described the Nigeria-Indonesia engagement as part of efforts to translate economic cooperation agreements into practical commercial relationships between businesses in both countries.

Invest Nigeria Highlights Africa’s Growing Market Potential

The Invest Nigeria executive director also highlighted Africa’s expanding market potential, pointing to Nigeria’s population and its implications for future trade and investment.

He said Nigeria’s projected population growth could strengthen the country’s position as a major destination for businesses seeking access to African consumers.

“Africa is becoming the major darling of the world in terms of market. With our ever-growing population in Nigeria, by 2050 it is known everywhere that Nigeria will be the third largest populated country in the world, going to about 400 million. So where the people are, there the market is,” Oyetade said.

He noted that the growing demand for goods and services presents opportunities for Nigerian businesses to expand production, attract investment and establish commercial partnerships with international companies.

Trade Promotion and Export Development

Invest Nigeria promotes Nigerian goods and services in domestic, regional and international markets, attracts local and foreign investors, and supports businesses seeking access to overseas markets.

According to Oyetade, the organisation’s activities include trade promotion, investment attraction, export development, trade missions and business facilitation to connect Nigerian companies with international buyers and investors.

Its other focus areas include market access through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and other trade agreements, small and medium-sized enterprise development, public-private partnerships and trade intelligence.

The organisation also supports economic diversification by promoting opportunities in sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing and technology.

Oyetade said these activities are intended to help Nigerian enterprises identify new markets, establish commercial relationships and increase their participation in international trade.

Nigeria-Indonesia Partnership Targets Wider Economic Benefits

The MoU signing is expected to provide a basis for stronger commercial relationships between Nigerian and Indonesian businesses.

For Nigeria, expanding trade partnerships could create opportunities for local enterprises to reach new customers, attract investment and increase non-oil exports.

The engagement also aligns with broader efforts to diversify the economy by strengthening sectors beyond oil and gas and encouraging businesses to compete in international markets.

However, the wider economic impact will depend on how the agreements are implemented, the commercial activities they generate and the extent to which participating businesses translate the commitments into actual trade and investment.

Invest Nigeria said the partnership reflects its mandate to support Nigerian enterprises in accessing international markets and developing commercial relationships that can contribute to job creation and economic growth.
