Health Risk Alert: NAFDAC Flags Fake ‘Zetol’ Antiseptic Mimicking Dettol Brand

📍Abuja | Media360Impact Report
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public health warning to Nigerians following the recall of certain batches of Zetol Antiseptic Products over serious regulatory violations.

In a statement under Public Alert No. 021/2026, the agency disclosed that the warning was triggered by a notification from the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP), which flagged the product for being marketed and sold in Pakistan without proper registration or regulatory approval.

According to DRAP, Zetol (Chloroxylenol) Germ Protection Liquid is completely unregistered, making its sale illegal within the Pakistani market. The antiseptic contains Chloroxylenol, a widely used active ingredient known for its germ-killing properties.

However, authorities stressed that without proper regulatory oversight, the product’s safety, quality, and effectiveness cannot be guaranteed.
A major concern raised by regulators is the product’s packaging, which closely resembles that of Dettol, a globally recognised antiseptic brand.

This similarity, officials warn, could mislead unsuspecting consumers into believing the product is authentic and approved, increasing the risk of exposure to a potentially substandard product.

While the recall currently affects batches identified in Islamabad, Pakistan, NAFDAC said it is proactively alerting Nigerians due to the risks associated with cross-border trade and possible importation into the country.

The agency cautioned that the use of unregistered antiseptic products poses significant health risks and urged healthcare professionals, pharmacists, distributors, and the general public to remain vigilant.

NAFDAC strongly advised Nigerians to avoid purchasing, using, or distributing Zetol Antiseptic Products. Members of the public are encouraged to report any sighting of the product or other suspected substandard medical items through official channels, including NAFDAC offices nationwide, its hotline (0800-162-3322), or via email at sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng.

Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding public health, the agency emphasised the importance of checking for valid NAFDAC registration numbers before purchasing antiseptics and other regulated products.
