The Federal Government has issued a strong warning against the illegal use of diplomatic titles, particularly the unauthorized adoption of the title “Ambassador,” describing the practice as fraudulent and misleading.

DICAN Chairman Fred Idehai

Authorities clarified that while individuals may serve as brand ambassadors for products or services, such roles do not confer any legal right to adopt or use the official title of “Ambassador,” which is strictly recognized under Nigerian law for accredited diplomatic representatives.

The government emphasized that the misuse of such titles not only misrepresents individuals but also undermines the integrity of Nigeria’s diplomatic system.

According to officials, the Ministry is collaborating with key security and regulatory agencies, including the Nigerian Immigration Service, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO), to clamp down on offenders.

The crackdown will also target the illegal issuance and use of fake diplomatic vehicle plate numbers.

“Any individual or group found engaging in the usurpation or fraudulent conferment of ambassadorial titles, as well as the use of unauthorized diplomatic plates, will be prosecuted in accordance with the law,” the statement said.

The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the credibility of Nigeria’s diplomatic service and warned that it will not tolerate actions capable of bringing the country into disrepute.
