The viral video of an alleged robbery around Unity Fountain in Maitama, Abuja, has triggered a major police crackdown, with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command arresting 70 suspects during raids on identified criminal flashpoints in the area.

The operation followed public concern generated by the video, which purportedly captured a robbery incident around the popular Unity Fountain area.

The FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, PhD., FCAI, ordered an immediate and comprehensive operation targeting identified blackspots around Unity Fountain and its environs.

Acting on the directive, operatives of the Maitama Police Division conducted coordinated raids on locations identified as potential criminal hideouts.

The operation resulted in the arrest of 70 persons suspected of involvement in various criminal activities, according to the police.

Following preliminary screening and due process, the command said 30 of those arrested were released, while 40 suspects were retained in custody for further investigation.

The police said the investigation took a significant turn when the victim in the robbery incident positively identified two of the suspects as persons he recognised from the attack allegedly captured in the viral video.

The two identified suspects, alongside others still in custody, are being investigated as detectives work to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine whether additional individuals were involved.

The FCT Police Command said the operation demonstrates its commitment to responding promptly to security concerns and disrupting criminal activities within the nation’s capital.

The command also urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious persons, movements and activities to the nearest police station or through its emergency contact lines.

Residents can contact the FCT Police Command on 08032003913 or 08061581938 for emergencies and credible security information.

The police said security operations would continue across the Federal Capital Territory as efforts intensify to identify criminal networks and improve safety in communities.
