The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has urged Nigerians, particularly young people, to be vigilant against deceptive offers commonly used by human traffickers to lure victims into exploitation.
The agency warned that human trafficking rarely begins with force. Instead, it often starts with attractive promises of jobs, scholarships, sports trials, talent recruitment opportunities, overseas travel or quick financial success.
According to NAPTIP, many traffickers exploit the hopes, ambitions and vulnerabilities of their victims by presenting opportunities that appear genuine but eventually lead to exploitation.
The agency advised Nigerians to be cautious of offers promising unusually high earnings within a short period without clearly explaining the nature of the job, salary structure, employment contract or working conditions.
NAPTIP stressed that legitimate employers are transparent about recruitment processes, remuneration and employment terms, urging job seekers to carefully read contracts, ask questions and verify every opportunity before making any commitment.
The agency also warned against blindly trusting individuals simply because they are acquaintances, neighbours, religious associates or members of social groups.
According to the agency, traffickers often spend weeks or even months building relationships with potential victims before manipulating them into situations that become increasingly difficult to escape.
“Don’t let trust replace verification. Always confirm opportunities through the appropriate organisations and official channels before making any commitment,” the agency advised.
NAPTIP further urged Nigerians to independently verify job offers, scholarships, sports trials and talent recruitment opportunities with the relevant organisations before accepting them.
The agency reminded the public that genuine opportunities can withstand scrutiny, while fraudulent offers often rely on secrecy, pressure and emotional manipulation.
Reaffirming its commitment to combating human trafficking, NAPTIP encouraged anyone who suspects trafficking activities or needs assistance to immediately contact the agency through its toll-free emergency hotline, 627.
The agency emphasized that while dreams and aspirations are valid, they should never become tools for exploitation.
