The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to comprehensive police reform, the development of a viable state policing framework, and stronger collaboration with key security institutions to enhance internal security across the country.

The IGP made the commitment while receiving the Commandant, management, directing staff, participants and support staff of the National Defence College (NDC) on a courtesy visit to the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.

The NDC delegation was led by its Commandant, Rear Admiral A. Ahmed, alongside senior military officers, faculty members and police participants currently undergoing strategic studies at the College.

During the meeting, discussions focused on police reform, state policing, command and coordination protocols, as well as other emerging internal security challenges confronting Nigeria.

Speaking during the visit, Rear Admiral Ahmed explained that the research paper presented to the Inspector-General was produced entirely by police officers participating in the programme. He said the faculty only provided academic supervision and methodological guidance, while the officers independently applied their professional experience and critical thinking to develop practical and implementable policy recommendations.

According to him, the study’s findings are expected to contribute significantly to ongoing national discussions on police reform and strengthen the operational capacity of the Nigeria Police Force in addressing emerging security threats up to the year 2035.

Responding, IGP Disu described the research as timely, comprehensive and highly relevant to Nigeria’s evolving security environment. He commended the officers for producing a well-researched document with practical recommendations capable of supporting ongoing efforts to modernise policing in the country.

The police chief noted that the study would serve as a valuable reference in developing an effective framework for state policing, particularly because it combines sound research methodology, public perspectives and lessons drawn from countries operating state police systems.

He further reiterated the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to strengthening institutional collaboration with the National Defence College and other strategic partners to improve policing, enhance internal security and support national development.
