China’s ruling Communist Party has announced tougher internal discipline, stronger oversight of officials and renewed anti-corruption measures as it prepares for its 21st National Congress in 2027.
The decisions were reached at the Fifth Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), which concluded on Thursday after a four-day meeting chaired by President Xi Jinping.
The meeting approved a comprehensive resolution on what the Party described as “full and rigorous Party self-governance”, placing accountability, stricter discipline and the fight against corruption at the centre of its political agenda.
The CPC also confirmed that its 21st National Congress will take place in the second half of 2027, a major political event expected to influence China’s leadership direction and development priorities.
According to the meeting’s communiqué, strengthening Party governance remains essential to achieving China’s economic, security and modernisation objectives.
The resolution also highlighted persistent challenges, including corruption risks, governance pressures and growing external uncertainties.
The Party reaffirmed Xi Jinping Thought on Party Building as its guiding framework for strengthening political leadership, improving governance and maintaining internal discipline.
As part of the renewed reform agenda, the plenum endorsed measures to strengthen institutional supervision, improve the management of officials and intensify efforts to combat corruption.
In a notable personnel development, Zhang Shengmin was elected to the Political Bureau, one of the Communist Party’s most influential decision-making bodies.
The meeting also confirmed disciplinary actions against several senior civilian and military officials over serious violations of Party discipline and the law.
The decisions underline the Chinese leadership’s determination to maintain strict internal control, strengthen accountability and reinforce Party authority as the country moves towards its 2027 National Congress.
