The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commissioned a new 60MVA, 132/33kV Mobile Power Transformer at its Damaturu 132/33kV Transmission Substation in Yobe State, significantly increasing electricity transmission capacity and improving power reliability across the state.

The transformer was successfully energised at 9:50 p.m. on Thursday, July 16, 2026, marking another milestone in TCN’s efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s national transmission network.

With the addition of the new transformer, the Damaturu Transmission Substation’s capacity has increased from 120MVA to 180MVA. The upgrade is expected to improve operational flexibility, provide backup during maintenance or unexpected outages, and enable the facility to meet growing electricity demand in the state.

The enhanced capacity also allows more bulk electricity to be delivered to the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) for distribution to customers across Damaturu, Buni Yadi, Babangida, the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital, and other neighbouring communities.

According to TCN, the project forms part of its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR)-funded transmission expansion programme aimed at modernising the nation’s power infrastructure and improving the reliability, stability, and efficiency of electricity supply nationwide.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to investing in strategic transmission projects that will support economic growth and deliver improved power supply to homes, businesses, and public institutions across Nigeria.
