Lagos, Nigeria – April 20, 2026
The Federal Ministry of Education has congratulated the Honourable Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, on his emergence as Most Innovative Cabinet Minister of the Year 2025 at the Silver Jubilee Awards organised by Independent Newspapers Limited in Lagos.

The award followed a rigorous and multi-layered selection process involving nationwide public voting, independent jury assessment, and editorial board review. It recognises excellence in leadership, innovation in governance, and measurable impact in public service delivery.

The recognition comes at a pivotal period for Nigeria’s education sector, currently undergoing sweeping reforms under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI). The initiative is focused on expanding access to education, improving quality, strengthening equity, and aligning learning outcomes with national development priorities.

A major highlight of the reforms is the revitalisation of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), which is equipping students with practical, job-ready skills while promoting entrepreneurship and economic productivity. The Ministry is repositioning skills acquisition as a viable and respected pathway to national growth.

In addition, targeted investments in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medical Sciences (STEMM) are being implemented through programmes such as the Medical Schools Rehabilitation Programme and the Engineering and Technology Faculties Rehabilitation Programme across federal universities.

These interventions are upgrading infrastructure, improving training capacity for health and technical professionals, and addressing the long-standing challenge of brain drain.

Other innovation-driven initiatives include the Student Venture Capital Grant (S-VCG), designed to support student-led innovations and startups, and Diaspora Bridge, which connects Nigerian professionals abroad with local academic institutions to enhance knowledge exchange and capacity building.

Efforts to reduce the number of out-of-school children have also intensified, with targeted interventions expanding access to education in underserved communities. At the same time, sustained investments in girls’ education through scholarships, mentorship, and safer learning environments are improving retention and completion rates nationwide.

Digital transformation is another cornerstone of the reform agenda. The Nigerian Education Data Infrastructure (NEDI) is enabling real-time tracking of students, teachers, and school facilities, improving planning, transparency, and accountability. The expansion of e-learning platforms is also extending access to quality education beyond traditional classrooms.

Teachers remain central to these reforms, with ongoing investments in professional development, welfare, and modern teaching tools aimed at enhancing classroom delivery and learning outcomes.

Speaking on the award, Dr. Alausa expressed appreciation to Nigerians and the organisers, describing the recognition as a reflection of collective efforts to reposition the sector.
“This honour underscores the progress we are making, but it also reminds us that more work lies ahead.

We remain committed to delivering sustainable reforms that will secure a better future for every Nigerian child,” he said.

The Ministry noted that the award further reinforces its commitment to advancing reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with a focus on building a resilient, skills-driven, and future-ready education system.
