The Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) has issued a public safety advisory urging residents, particularly herders and farmers, to stay away from its open firing range in Afaka, Kaduna, during a scheduled military exercise.
This was contained in a statement released on Sunday by the Academy’s Public Relations Officer, Major Mohammed Maidawa.
According to the statement, a Range Classification Exercise for Nigerian Army personnel serving at the Academy will take place from May 5 to May 8, 2025, at the NDA Open Range, Afaka. The exercise is designed to sharpen soldiers’ skills and improve their weapon-handling proficiency.
“To ensure the safety of all residents, the NDA appeals to members of surrounding communities to avoid the designated range area for the duration of the exercise,” Maj. Maidawa stated.
He emphasized that strict safety protocols will be in effect and unauthorized individuals will not be permitted access to the training grounds.
The NDA also appealed to media organizations and community leaders to help disseminate the information widely, ensuring that all stakeholders are informed and able to take necessary precautions.
“The NDA appreciates the understanding and cooperation of residents in the affected communities and remains committed to maintaining a strong, respectful relationship with its neighbors while prioritizing their safety during this critical training,” the statement concluded.
