The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and AKADEMIYA2063 have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deepen collaboration in artificial intelligence (AI), climate and weather data analytics, climate information services, and evidence-based research aimed at improving climate resilience, agricultural productivity, and food security in Nigeria.
The agreement was signed on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, by the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, who also serves as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Representing AKADEMIYA2063 were the Managing Director, Dr. Debisi Araba, and the Director of Data Intelligence and Governance and National Representative for Senegal, Dr. Racine Ly.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, Prof. Anosike said the partnership reflects NiMet’s commitment to embracing innovation and positioning the agency for the future through artificial intelligence and digital transformation.
According to him, NiMet has already established an AI Research Team to explore how artificial intelligence and machine learning can improve weather forecasting, climate services, and operational efficiency. He expressed confidence that the collaboration with AKADEMIYA2063 would accelerate these efforts and deliver greater value to Nigerians.
On his part, Dr. Araba described the agreement as a significant milestone in strengthening Africa’s capacity for data-driven decision-making and evidence-based policymaking.
He noted that combining AKADEMIYA2063’s expertise in data analytics with NiMet’s meteorological capabilities would produce practical solutions to address climate challenges, improve food security, and support sustainable development across the continent.
Under the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding, both organisations will collaborate on applying artificial intelligence to climate monitoring, seasonal weather forecasting, early warning systems, and evidence-based decision-making.
The partnership is expected to strengthen AI-powered climate services while supporting agricultural planning and improving resilience to climate-related risks in Nigeria.
To ensure effective implementation of the agreement, NiMet and AKADEMIYA2063 will establish a Joint Technical Committee. The committee will work closely with NiMet’s AI Research Team to identify priority areas, coordinate activities under the MoU, and develop joint initiatives that promote innovation, climate services, AI research, and sustainable development.
