Immediate past Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has officially assumed duty as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the State of Qatar following his arrival in Doha, the Gulf nation’s capital.
Professor Yakubu was received at the airport by Ambassador Ibrahim Yousif Abdullah Fakhro, Director of the Protocol Department at Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, alongside several top diplomatic and community leaders.
Among those who welcomed the new Nigerian envoy were 13 African ambassadors based in Qatar, Secretary-General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), Dr. Philip Mshelbila, and President of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Qatar, Michael Ndukaihe Ihekwaba.
Yakubu’s appointment marks a significant transition from electoral administration to diplomacy, placing him at the center of Nigeria’s engagement with one of the Middle East’s most influential economic and diplomatic powers.
As ambassador, he is expected to strengthen bilateral relations between Nigeria and Qatar, deepen economic cooperation, attract foreign investments and promote strategic partnerships across key sectors.
One of the critical areas of focus will be energy collaboration. With both countries possessing vast natural gas reserves, Yakubu is expected to explore opportunities that align with Nigeria’s Decade of Gas initiative while fostering cooperation in liquefied natural gas (LNG) development and related investments.
The ambassador is also expected to engage Qatari investors and institutions to attract investments into Nigeria’s agriculture, aviation, digital economy, infrastructure and real estate sectors.
Beyond economic diplomacy, Yakubu will play a key role in advancing Nigeria’s regional interests, supporting peace-building initiatives and strengthening cooperation on security and development issues across Africa and the Middle East.
Another priority will be enhancing support for Nigerians living and working in Qatar. Through collaboration with diaspora groups, including NIDO Qatar, the embassy is expected to improve consular services, promote the welfare of Nigerians abroad and encourage diaspora-driven investments into Nigeria.
His appointment comes as Nigeria seeks to deepen economic diplomacy and strengthen strategic partnerships capable of supporting the country’s development objectives and foreign policy goals.
