Former Naval Officer Jamila Malafa Joins INEC as National Commissioner

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has sworn in Rear Admiral Jamila Malafa (Rtd) as a National Commissioner during a ceremony held at its headquarters in Abuja.

The event, which took place on April 30, 2026, was attended by senior officials of the commission, directors, family members, and invited guests.

In his remarks, INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupita, congratulated Malafa on her appointment and formally welcomed her to the commission.

He described the occasion as significant, noting that INEC is a statutory body comprising the chairman and twelve national commissioners appointed by the President to oversee elections in Nigeria.Amupita identified Malafa as an indigene of Adamawa State and expressed confidence that her appointment would strengthen the commission’s operations.

He urged her to leverage her experience in military service, security management, and logistics to enhance INEC’s preparedness for upcoming elections.

The chairman emphasized the importance of teamwork and dedication in delivering credible, peaceful, and transparent elections, adding that the new commissioner is expected to assume duties immediately.

He also disclosed that election activities are set to begin in June 2026, including by-elections in states such as Kebbi, Ekiti, and Osun to fill vacant positions.

On her response, Malafa expressed appreciation for the warm reception and thanked the chairman and members of the commission.

She called for unity and collaboration among staff and stakeholders to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy, concluding with a message of service and commitment.
