Ekiti Church Attack: CAN Demands Justice Over Killing, Abduction of Worshippers
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has strongly condemned the deadly attack on a church gathering in Eda Oniyo, Ekiti State, where gunmen reportedly killed a pastor and abducted several worshippers during an open-air crusade.
In a statement issued on April 29, 2026, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, described the incident as “deeply disturbing” and a direct assault on human life and freedom of worship.
According to the association, the victims had gathered peacefully for religious worship when the attackers struck, turning a sacred moment into a scene of violence.
CAN expressed sympathy to the family of the slain pastor and solidarity with the affected Christian community in Ekiti State, while calling for the immediate and safe release of those abducted.
The association also linked the attack to a growing wave of insecurity across the country, referencing a recent incident in Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, where gunmen abducted residents, including clergy and their families.
“This pattern of violence reflects a worsening security situation that demands urgent attention,” the statement noted.
CAN stressed that the protection of lives and property remains the primary responsibility of the government, urging security agencies to act swiftly to apprehend the perpetrators and ensure justice is served.
The group further called for increased security presence in vulnerable and rural communities, alongside improved intelligence gathering to prevent future attacks.
It warned against normalising attacks on places of worship, describing such acts as a threat to the nation’s moral fabric and collective safety.
“Places of worship must never become hunting grounds for criminals,” CAN stated.
The association concluded by praying for comfort for the bereaved families, safety for those in captivity, and lasting peace across the country.
