Vice President Kashim Shettima on Saturday arrived in Addis Ababa to participate in the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union.

Representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Vice President joined African leaders and international partners at the high-level plenary, a key decision-making platform where the continent’s most pressing political and socio-economic issues are addressed.

This year’s summit is themed: “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.”

The discussions are expected to centre on strengthening climate resilience, mobilising infrastructure financing, and improving the strategic management of Africa’s water resources a sector widely regarded as critical to public health, food security, industrial growth and long-term development.

Water security remains a major challenge across many African countries, with climate change, rapid urbanisation and inadequate infrastructure putting increasing pressure on access to clean water and sanitation systems.

During the summit, Shettima is scheduled to hold bilateral and multilateral meetings aimed at deepening Nigeria’s alignment with the AU’s long-term development blueprint, Agenda 2063, which outlines the continent’s vision for inclusive growth and sustainable development over the next four decades.

The annual AU Assembly provides a coordinated platform for African leaders to harmonise policy direction and strengthen continental cooperation in tackling shared challenges.
