Abuja, Feb. 2, 2026 — The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has advised the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), FCT Council, to consider rescheduling its planned peaceful protest, originally slated for Tuesday, February 3, 2026, citing emerging security concerns that could threaten public safety.

In a statement, the FCT Police reiterated its respect for the constitutional rights of citizens to assemble and protest peacefully. However, intelligence reports indicate that proscribed groups, including elements of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, and other non-state actors, may attempt to infiltrate the protest and hijack it for activities that could undermine law and order.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said the potential infiltration poses a significant risk to public safety, and urged the organisers to consider postponing the protest to a later date to prevent security breaches while safeguarding the rights of residents to safety, freedom of movement, and normal daily activities.

“The appeal is made in the overriding interest of public safety, while respecting the right to lawful assembly,” the statement read.

The FCT Police Command reassured Abuja residents of its commitment to protect lives and property, urging citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies to maintain peace and security across the territory.
