Nigeria’s Super Eagles suffered a painful 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, in their second Group L fixture of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The result has triggered widespread frustration among Nigerian football supporters, with many questioning the team’s performance and the tactical decisions of head coach Eric Chelle.
Franculino Djú opened the scoring for Guinea-Bissau in the 15th minute after Nigeria struggled to settle into the match.
The Super Eagles improved after the break but failed to turn their opportunities into goals.
Guinea-Bissau doubled their advantage in the 66th minute through Mama Baldé before Álvaro Djaló completed the rout in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
Nigeria had 55 per cent possession and recorded 12 shots, but Guinea-Bissau also registered 12 attempts and were more clinical, finishing with seven shots on target compared with Nigeria’s five.
The defeat leaves Nigeria on three points from two Group L matches, while Guinea-Bissau moved to six points after winning their opening two games.
For many Nigerian supporters, the manner of the defeat was particularly painful, with criticism directed at the players and coaching decisions.
Chelle has also faced questions over his tactical approach after the heavy loss. However, the coach himself attributed the defeat to factors including a lack of aggression from his team, the conditions surrounding the game and Guinea-Bissau’s motivation.
The loss has now increased pressure on the Super Eagles ahead of their remaining AFCON 2027 qualifying fixtures.
For Nigerian fans, the 3-0 scoreline is more than just another defeat. It has raised fresh concerns about whether the team can recover quickly enough and put its qualification campaign back on track.
