Abuja — The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Secretary-General, Doreen Bogdan-Martin, has called for stronger African participation in shaping the future of the global digital economy, urging countries across the continent to move beyond being technology consumers to becoming creators, innovators and contributors to international digital standards.

Bogdan-Martin made the call during the recently concluded regional telecommunications conference hosted by Nigeria, where government officials, regulators and industry stakeholders discussed strategies to strengthen Africa’s role in global digital governance.

She emphasized that Africa’s growing digital economy presents enormous opportunities and urged Member States to work together to influence global policies that will shape the future of telecommunications, innovation and emerging technologies.

The conference also served as a strategic platform for African countries and candidates seeking election or re-election to various leadership positions within the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) ahead of the 2026 ITU Plenipotentiary Conference.

Participants agreed that presenting a united African position would enhance the continent’s influence in international telecommunications policy while advancing shared goals in connectivity, digital innovation, infrastructure development and inclusive digital transformation.

Nigeria’s successful hosting of the conference reaffirmed the country’s commitment to strengthening regional cooperation, accelerating digital transformation and promoting Africa’s interests within the global telecommunications community.

The gathering further highlighted Nigeria’s growing leadership role in supporting policies that promote innovation, digital inclusion and sustainable development across the continent.

The statement was signed by Mrs. Nnenna Ukoha, Director of Public Affairs, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), on July 26, 2026.
