ABUJA | Media360Impact

Preparations for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja have been overshadowed by allegations that suspected political thugs attempted to disrupt the event, raising concerns about political intimidation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The alleged incident reportedly occurred on Sunday evening, October 25, 2026, at JD Event Centre, Abuja, where unidentified men were accused of attempting to destroy decorations installed ahead of the party’s scheduled meeting on Monday.

According to the organisers, the men were resisted but allegedly threatened to return and disrupt the proceedings.

The identities of the individuals involved and whether a formal police complaint had been lodged were unclear as of the time of filing this report. Media360Impact could not independently verify the allegations.

Political Observer Condemns Alleged Intimidation

Reacting to the incident, Dr Prince, a concerned observer associated with Northern Integrity Professionals (NIP), described the alleged conduct as unacceptable if established.

He said political activities should take place in an atmosphere where citizens and political organisations can exercise their constitutional rights without fear of intimidation.

Dr Prince argued that developments of this nature underline the need for citizens, public institutions and international observers to insist on respect for democratic principles and constitutional rights.

He also questioned whether public officials were upholding the oaths they took upon assuming office, stressing that such commitments should guide their conduct and the exercise of public authority.

According to him, protecting democratic institutions requires more than ceremonial declarations, as public office holders must demonstrate their commitment to the rule of law through their actions.

Dr Prince, whose interests include crisis management, strategic intervention, organisational leadership and institutional ethics, indicated that he was considering devoting greater attention to efforts aimed at protecting democratic institutions.

Earlier Attacks Raise Political Security Concerns

The reported Abuja incident comes amid previous reports of violence involving NDC members and supporters.

In September, a party meeting in Nkanu West, Enugu State, was reportedly disrupted.

Another incident occurred on October 22, when an attack on the convoy of an NDC State House of Assembly candidate in Ebonyi State reportedly left one person dead and three others injured, according to police accounts cited in the initial report.

However, no evidence has been established linking the earlier incidents to the alleged disturbance at JD Event Centre in Abuja.

The circumstances surrounding Sunday’s incident remain unclear, making independent verification and any relevant police investigation important in determining what happened and who was responsible.

NDC Schedules NEC Meeting, Secretariat Commissioning

Despite the reported threat, the NDC has scheduled a series of activities for Monday, October 26, 2026.

The party’s third National Executive Committee meeting is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., with the presentation of its statement of account by the National Treasurer among the listed activities.

The programme will continue at 2 p.m. with the commissioning of the party’s new national secretariat in Jabi, Abuja.

At 5 p.m., the party is expected to inaugurate its National Campaign Council and present Certificates of Return to its candidates.

The activities are expected to attract media attention as political parties continue preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The reported incident has renewed concerns about the safety of political gatherings and the need to protect the rights of political parties and their members to organise peacefully.

As the NDC proceeds with its scheduled activities, attention will be on whether the meeting and other events take place without disruption.

Political intimidation, where established, threatens peaceful participation and undermines public confidence in the democratic process. Authorities and political stakeholders are therefore expected to uphold the rule of law and ensure that political disagreements do not escalate into violence.
