Girls in ICT: NCC Takes 185 Students on Museum Tour to Boost Tech Interest in Nigeria

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has commended the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, for driving initiatives aimed at equipping Nigerian girls with practical digital skills and expanding access to opportunities in the tech sector.

The commendation came during the 2026 National Girls in ICT Programme, where the NCC hosted 185 female students from different parts of the country at the National Communications Museum in Abuja for an educational tour.

The initiative is part of NCC’s broader effort to bridge the gender gap in technology and strengthen the pipeline of young female talent entering Nigeria’s fast-growing digital economy.

During the visit, the students were taken through exhibits showcasing the evolution of telecommunications in Nigeria—from early telephony systems to modern broadband infrastructure and digital communication services. Organisers said the experience was designed to make the history of the sector more relatable while inspiring curiosity about future careers in technology.

The NCC explained that the programme is intended to encourage young girls to see themselves as active participants in Nigeria’s digital transformation. By exposing them to both the history and future of ICT, the Commission aims to boost interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), as well as broader ICT-related careers.

Officials further noted that the initiative aligns with national digital inclusion goals and supports efforts to empower the next generation of female innovators, entrepreneurs, and tech leaders.

They stressed that closing the gender gap in ICT remains essential for inclusive economic growth and a more diverse digital ecosystem.

The Girls in ICT Programme continues to serve as a platform for breaking barriers limiting girls’ participation in technology while nurturing early interest in digital careers across Nigeria.
