The Nigerian Navy has rescued Bayelsa State Commissioner for Trade, Industry and Investment, Dr Ebieri Jones, and six other passengers following a boat accident in Abedigbene waters, Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
The incident occurred on November 5, 2026, when a passenger boat travelling from Yenagoa to Akassa reportedly capsized with eight people on board.
While seven occupants were rescued, a police officer travelling in the boat remains missing, with search and rescue operations ongoing.
In a statement signed by the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the Navy said personnel of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) FORMOSO carried out the rescue operation in collaboration with local divers and members of the Abedigbene Fishing Community.
According to the statement, naval personnel stationed at the Labrador Lagosgbene Houseboat immediately mobilised after receiving a distress report from a local fisherman.
The team subsequently launched search and rescue operations with support from members of the host community.
Those rescued included Dr Jones, an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and five other passengers.
The survivors were taken to the naval houseboat, where they received first aid. Preliminary assessments indicated that none had sustained visible injuries.
However, the Navy confirmed that a police officer who was among the eight occupants remained missing, adding that efforts to locate him were continuing.
Dr Jones and the six other survivors were subsequently transported to Yenagoa on November 6 to reunite with their families.
Commending the rescue team, the Commanding Officer of FOB FORMOSO praised the naval personnel for their prompt response, professionalism and dedication.
He also acknowledged the contributions of local divers and members of the Abedigbene Fishing Community, whose support helped facilitate the rescue operation.
The Navy said the incident highlighted the importance of rapid emergency response and cooperation between security agencies and coastal communities in protecting lives on Nigeria’s waterways.
It reaffirmed its commitment to maritime safety and the protection of lives within its area of responsibility, while search efforts continue for the missing police officer.
