The Labour Party has congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad on the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, urging citizens not to lose faith in the country’s democratic journey despite prevailing challenges.

In a statement issued on Friday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, the Labour Party said Democracy Day provides an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices of pro-democracy heroes, particularly the late Chief MKO Abiola and other patriots whose struggles helped secure democratic governance in Nigeria.
The party noted that while Nigeria’s democratic experience has witnessed setbacks and unmet expectations, citizens should remain hopeful about the nation’s future.
According to the statement, democracy remains the most inclusive and participatory system of government because it allows citizens to play a direct role in shaping public affairs and holding leaders accountable.
The Labour Party also called on those in positions of authority to intensify efforts to address the country’s pressing challenges, including insecurity, economic hardship, hunger, unemployment and inadequate infrastructure.
It stressed that the true benefits of democracy should be reflected in the improved welfare and living conditions of ordinary Nigerians.
The party further stated that its core principles of Equal Opportunity and Social Justice align with the ideals of democracy, emphasizing that a genuine democratic system must provide a level playing field for all citizens and political actors.
As the nation gradually moves towards another electoral cycle, the Labour Party encouraged Nigerians to remain optimistic and committed to the democratic process, assuring citizens of its readiness to provide a credible platform for national development and good governance.
The party maintained that it would continue to support leaders with proven competence, integrity and capacity to drive economic growth, social justice and national renewal.
The Labour Party wished Nigerians a happy Democracy Day and called for collective efforts toward building a more prosperous and inclusive nation.
