In Nigeria’s increasingly competitive political environment, the ability to communicate a party’s ideas, defend its policies and respond effectively to criticism has become an important part of political leadership.
Few figures currently occupy that space more visibly than Barrister Felix Morka, CON, National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
A lawyer, human rights advocate, development specialist and politician, Morka has become one of the most recognisable public faces of Nigeria’s governing party. His role goes beyond issuing statements. It requires explaining the party’s positions, responding to criticism, engaging the media and helping Nigerians understand the political choices and policies of the APC.
The APC currently lists Morka as its National Publicity Secretary, a position he retained following the party’s 2026 national convention.
A Journey from Advocacy to Politics
What makes Morka’s political communication career particularly interesting is the professional journey that preceded it.
Before becoming deeply involved in partisan politics, he was active in human rights and civil society advocacy. He was associated with the Civil Liberties Organisation and founded the Social and Economic Rights Action Center (SERAC), an organisation focused on social and economic rights.
That background matters because political communication is not simply about speaking. At its best, it involves research, argument, evidence, persuasion and an understanding of the concerns of ordinary citizens.
Morka’s legal training has also shaped the way he approaches public debate. A lawyer is trained to examine competing arguments, identify weaknesses and construct a case. Those skills can become particularly useful in political communication, where government policies and party positions are constantly subjected to public scrutiny.
The Pressure of Being the Party’s Voice
The position of National Publicity Secretary is one of the most demanding positions within any political organisation.
The spokesman is expected to defend the party when it is attacked, explain its policies when questions arise and provide clarity when political developments generate confusion.
For the APC, which has governed Nigeria at the federal level since 2015, the responsibility is even more significant.
Morka has therefore found himself at the centre of some of the country’s most important political conversations, from economic reforms and governance to opposition politics, elections and the party’s preparations for 2027.
His style is often direct and argumentative. Supporters see that as confidence and preparedness; critics may interpret it differently. But in either case, his willingness to engage difficult questions has made him a regular presence in Nigeria’s political media space.
More Than Political Slogans
One of the qualities that distinguishes effective political communication from ordinary political rhetoric is the ability to construct an argument.
Morka’s public engagements frequently seek to place the APC’s position within a broader political or policy argument rather than simply repeat party slogans.
That approach is particularly important at a time when Nigerians are demanding greater explanations from political leaders.
Whether the subject is economic policy, governance, opposition politics or the 2027 elections, the challenge for a party spokesman is to make the party’s case while remaining sufficiently engaged with the concerns being raised by citizens and journalists.
That is not always an easy balance.
Recognition Beyond Party Structures
Morka’s public profile has also received recognition beyond the APC.
In April 2026, President Bola Tinubu described him as a human rights advocate with extensive civil society experience and highlighted the strategic communication experience he brings to interpreting and explaining the APC manifesto. The President also commended his maturity and contribution to the party’s internal and external communication.
Morka also serves as Chairman of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), giving him another significant connection to Nigeria’s media and public communication environment.
In 2025, President Tinubu conferred the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) on Morka as part of a wider list of national honourees.
These recognitions add another dimension to a career that has moved through civil society advocacy, development work, media communication and partisan politics.
From Civil Society to Partisan Politics
Morka’s journey also reflects a broader pattern in Nigerian public life: the movement of civil society actors into formal political structures.
There will naturally be debates about whether activists who enter partisan politics can maintain the same independence associated with civil society work. That debate is legitimate and necessary in a democracy.
But it is equally important to recognise that professional experience acquired outside partisan politics can contribute positively to political institutions.
Morka brought with him experience in human rights, law, development and advocacy. In his present role, those experiences have become part of his approach to political communication.
The Challenge of Political Communication
Political communication in Nigeria is not conducted in a vacuum.
The country faces economic pressures, security concerns, unemployment, infrastructure deficits and public distrust. Political parties therefore operate in an environment where every statement is examined, challenged and amplified through traditional and social media.
For a party spokesman, the microphone can therefore be both an opportunity and a burden.
The opportunity is to explain the party’s position directly to citizens. The burden is that every defence must withstand scrutiny.
This is where preparation becomes important.
A spokesman who understands the facts, appreciates the policy background and anticipates difficult questions is better positioned to defend his organisation credibly.
Looking Towards 2027
With Nigeria moving gradually towards another general election cycle, political communication will become even more important.
The APC will have to explain its record, defend its policies, respond to opposition criticism and persuade voters about its vision for the country.
Morka will inevitably remain one of the principal voices in that conversation.
His responsibility will not simply be to defend the APC. It will also be to communicate in a manner that recognises the intelligence of the Nigerian public.
Citizens can disagree with a political party and still deserve clear explanations of its policies. Opposition parties can challenge the government while still being required to engage facts. And political spokesmen can defend their organisations without abandoning the responsibility that comes with occupying a prominent place in national discourse.
A Voice in a Competitive Political Space
For me, Felix Morka represents an interesting intersection between advocacy, law, development and partisan politics.
He is a lawyer who understands argument, an advocate who understands public engagement and a politician who understands the importance of defending the organisation he represents.
Whether Nigerians agree with his political positions is ultimately a matter of individual judgment. But his journey demonstrates how professional experience in civil society and public affairs can transition into political communication.
As Nigeria approaches another critical political period, the quality of public discourse will matter.
Political parties will need communicators who can defend their positions, engage criticism and explain their policies without reducing every disagreement to political hostility.
That is the space Felix Morka currently occupies.
His voice has become one of the principal channels through which the APC communicates with Nigerians. The effectiveness of that voice will ultimately be measured not only by how strongly it defends the party, but also by how convincingly it engages facts, responds to legitimate criticism and contributes to a more informed national conversation.
In a democracy, political communication should not merely be about winning arguments. It should also be about helping citizens understand the choices before them.
That, perhaps, is the larger responsibility attached to the microphone Felix Morka carries today.
