Troops of the Nigerian Army have repelled a coordinated night attack by suspected insurgents in Mallam Fatori, Abadam Local Government Area of Borno State, neutralising more than 60 fighters in the process.
The attack occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, March 18, 2026, when terrorists believed to be affiliated with Boko Haram/ISWAP advanced from the Duguri axis on foot, reportedly supported by armed drones, in an attempt to breach the 68 Battalion’s defensive position.
Military sources said the movement of the attackers was detected early, prompting a swift and coordinated response by ground troops, supported by air components. The ensuing engagement led to heavy casualties among the insurgents, forcing the survivors to retreat in disarray towards the Arege area.
Following the encounter, troops commenced follow-up operations to track and intercept fleeing fighters, while Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance assets were deployed to monitor escape routes and prevent regrouping.
The Nigerian Army reiterated its commitment to sustained offensive operations against terrorist groups, assuring residents of continued efforts to protect lives and maintain security across affected regions.
