The League of Women Voters of Nigeria (NILOWV) strongly condemns the unjust and politically motivated suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan by the Senate Committee. This decision, made in blatant disregard of a court-issued 72-hour injunction, is not only a violation of her fundamental human rights but also a dangerous precedent that undermines democracy and the rule of law in Nigeria.
In a statement signed on 7th March 2025 by Signed:
Irene Awunah-Ikyegh President, League of Women Voters of Nigeria (NILOWV) noting that despite judicial intervention, the Senate Committee proceeded with its recommendation, which the Senate swiftly adopted—an outright defiance of the legal process. This action exposes the deep-seated systemic barriers that women in politics continue to face in Nigeria.
We cannot ignore the Senate President’s persistent lack of emotional intelligence and disregard for women’s political participation. His actions send a clear message: women are not welcome as equal stakeholders in Nigeria’s governance. This must not stand.
NILOWV Demands Immediate Reversal
We demand the immediate reinstatement of Senator Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan and the reversal of this unconstitutional suspension. We urge her to challenge this injustice through legal channels and expose the Senate Committee’s abuse of power.
This is not just about one woman; it is about the integrity of our democratic institutions. The Nigerian Senate has, once again, demonstrated a lack of transparency, fairness, and respect for due process. Such actions weaken our democracy and further discourage women’s participation in politics.
A United Call for Justice and Equality
We call on all Nigerian women and allies to stand in solidarity with Senator Natasha. We refuse to accept the continued marginalization of women in governance. NILOWV hereby passes a vote of no confidence in the Senate President, urging him to foster a truly inclusive political space.
The Fight for Women’s Political Representation Continues
Beyond this immediate injustice, we reaffirm our commitment to the 74 Special Seats Bill, which seeks to increase women’s political representation in Nigeria. Until this bill is passed and implemented, women will remain systematically sidelined.
To Senator Natasha, we say: We stand with you. We support you. We will fight for your rights. Your courage in the face of oppression is an inspiration to all Nigerian women.
To the Senate President and the Nigerian Senate, we declare: You have failed Nigerian women. You have failed democracy. You have failed the rule of law. It is time to correct this injustice and pave the way for a truly inclusive democracy.
The Time for Change is Now
We urge all Nigerians to rise and demand accountability. We cannot afford to remain silent. The fight for justice, equality, and fairness is one that we must all embrace.
Solidarity Forever!
