The Nigerian Air Force’s (NAF) fleet modernisation drive gained fresh momentum in Italy as the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, engaged Leonardo Aircraft Division on the ongoing M-346 fighter aircraft programme.
During the engagement, discussions focused on synchronising aircraft delivery timelines with the readiness of the Nigerian Air Force’s Main Operating Base to ensure seamless induction of the M-346 platform into service.
Air Marshal Aneke emphasised the strategic importance of early and comprehensive training for pilots, engineers, and logisticians, alongside the establishment of a Leonardo Support Office in Nigeria. He noted that these measures are critical to improving aircraft availability, reducing turnaround time, enhancing local technical capacity, and strengthening the long-term sustainment of both existing and future NAF platforms.
According to the CAS, the approach aligns with the Federal Government’s policy thrust on self-reliance, operational efficiency, and sustainable defence capability development.
“These initiatives will significantly enhance our operational readiness while ensuring that the Nigerian Air Force develops the internal capacity required to sustain modern platforms over the long term,” Air Marshal Aneke said.
Responding on behalf of Leonardo, Senior Vice President, Sales, Leonardo Helicopter Division, Mr Andrea Mirteto, expressed appreciation for the visit and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to Nigeria as a valued and trusted strategic partner.
He assured that Leonardo remains fully committed to the timely delivery, sustainment, and expansion of cooperation under both the AW-109 Trekker and M-346 aircraft programmes, stressing the company’s readiness to deepen its partnership with the Nigerian Air Force.
Air Marshal Aneke further reassured Nigerians that the Nigerian Air Force, working in concert with other armed services and security agencies, remains resolute in executing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s mandate to decisively address security challenges across the country.
He noted that sustained investments in modern platforms, advanced training, and strategic partnerships are geared towards building a more capable, responsive, and resilient Air Force—one positioned to effectively support joint operations, protect lives and property, and create the secure environment necessary for national development and economic growth.
