The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed deep shock and outrage over the gruesome killing of Mrs. Fatima Abubakar and her six children in Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters, Kano State.

The tragic incident, which occurred on Saturday, January 17, 2026, reportedly involved unknown assailants who broke into the family’s residence, brutally murdered the victims with dangerous weapons, and threw an infant into a well, according to media reports.

Reacting to the attack, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, OFR, SAN, described the act as barbaric and inhuman, noting that it constitutes not only a crime against humanity but also a gross violation of the fundamental right to life as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and international human rights instruments to which Nigeria is a signatory.

Dr. Ojukwu said the Commission strongly condemns the heinous crime and urged the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies to carry out a thorough investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are swiftly apprehended and brought to justice. He stressed that acts of such extreme violence must not be allowed to thrive in society and that impunity should never be tolerated.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the victims, the people of Dorayi Chiranchi, and the government and people of Kano State. The NHRC stands in solidarity with them at this time of profound grief,” he said.

The Commission reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the protection and promotion of human rights in Nigeria and pledged its readiness to collaborate with law enforcement agencies to ensure a comprehensive investigation and prosecution of those responsible.

In conclusion, the Executive Secretary called on all stakeholders to work together to uphold the sanctity of human life and promote a society founded on peace, justice, and respect for human dignity.
