The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has recorded another milestone under the leadership of Comrade Grace Ike, with the successful facilitation of free eye surgery for veteran journalist and former Council Chairman, Comrade Ndamadu Sule, at the prestigious Nizamiye Hospital, Abuja.
The surgery, conducted on August 28, 2025, marked the end of years of visual impairment for the former NTA staff, significantly improving his quality of life.
Expressing gratitude, Comrade Sule lauded the Grace Ike-led executive for what he described as an uncommon show of compassion and true leadership.
“By December 22, it would be seven years since my struggle began. I thank them for spending resources to help me. I remain deeply grateful to the NUJ-FCT Council for their support,” Sule stated.
Overwhelmed with relief, the former NUJ FCT Chairman prayed for continued blessings upon Chairman Grace Ike and her executive team, urging journalists across the Council to rally behind her administration.
“She called me before the elections. I didn’t know her, but I prayed for her as a female leader. God answered those prayers. Her work in healthcare speaks for itself. I am thankful she became Chairman and is fulfilling her duties with humanity,” he added.
In line with her campaign promise to prioritize the health and welfare of NUJ members, two more journalists Mr. Nicholas Ngozichukwu of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) and Mr. Kamoru Odunlami of ITV have also been scheduled for free eye surgery at Nizamiye Hospital following medical assessment.
Others who were screened but found unfit for immediate surgery have been placed on medication and follow-up care until they become eligible for the procedure.
Beneficiaries commended the Council for its sustained commitment to member welfare.
This health initiative forms part of a broader agenda by the NUJ FCT Council, which has partnered with Nizamiye Hospital to deliver free medical interventions to journalists a first of its kind in recent years.
The ongoing programm underscores the union’s renewed commitment to the well-being of journalists and the promotion of a healthier, more humane media community in Nigeria’s capital.
