The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, on behalf of the Government and people of Nigeria, extends heartfelt congratulations to His Excellency Ronald Lamola, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of the Republic of South Africa, and to all South Africans on the momentous celebration of the 31st anniversary of Freedom Day.
This was contained in a statement signed on 28th April 2025 by Signed Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa Spokesperson Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja

According to the statement, Freedom Day commemorates South Africa’s historic transition from apartheid to democracy, symbolizing the enduring resilience, courage, and unity of the South African people. It stands as a powerful testament to the triumph of justice and the human spirit.
Nigeria and South Africa share deep-rooted ties, strengthened through decades of solidarity during the liberation struggle. Nigeria’s unwavering support—through diplomatic engagement, material assistance, and moral advocacy—underscored our steadfast commitment to the cause of freedom and to the principles of pan-Africanism.
Today, as two of Africa’s leading economies and democracies, Nigeria and South Africa share a collective responsibility to promote peace, security, and sustainable development across the continent. Nigeria remains dedicated to further deepening our bilateral relations, expanding cooperation across key sectors including trade and investment under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), cultural and educational exchanges, and youth empowerment initiatives.
On this special occasion, Nigeria stands in solidarity with South Africa in honouring the sacrifices and legacies of iconic leaders such as Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Govan Mbeki, and Thabo Mbeki. We reaffirm our shared commitment to advancing the vision of a united, peaceful, and prosperous Africa.
