The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) have called for stronger cybersecurity and data protection measures as Nigeria expands its digital infrastructure and adoption of artificial intelligence (AI).
The call was made at the International Cybersecurity Conference 2026, where government officials and international representatives stressed the need for a safer and more reliable digital environment.
Representing the NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Aminu Maida, the Commission’s Executive Commissioner for Technical Services, Engr. Abraham Oshadami, delivered a keynote address highlighting the importance of securing Nigeria’s digital infrastructure against emerging cyber threats.
Maida said the success of Nigeria’s digital transformation should not be measured solely by internet speed and connectivity but also by how effectively digital networks can withstand cyberattacks.
He emphasised that reliable digital infrastructure must be supported by strong security measures capable of protecting users and sustaining confidence in digital services.
“The future of Nigeria’s digital transformation will not be judged merely by how fast our networks run, but by how securely they stand when tested,” Maida said.
AI Adoption Raises Data Protection Concerns
The conference also featured a keynote presentation by the National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the NDPC, Dr Vincent Olatinji, titled “Trust by Design: Data Protection and Privacy in the Age of AI.”
Olatinji highlighted the need to integrate privacy, trust and data protection into digital systems from the earliest stages of development.
His presentation focused on the importance of responsible technology development as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into digital services and everyday activities.

Embedding data protection safeguards into digital platforms from the design stage can help reduce privacy risks and strengthen public confidence in emerging technologies.
Collaboration Key to a Safer Digital Environment
Discussions at the conference underscored the importance of cooperation among government agencies, international partners and other stakeholders in addressing cybersecurity challenges.
Participants highlighted the need for proactive security measures, responsible adoption of artificial intelligence and stronger safeguards for personal information.
The conference also reinforced the importance of building a digital ecosystem where innovation goes hand in hand with security, privacy and accountability.
As Nigeria continues its digital transformation, the message from the NCC and NDPC is clear: expanding connectivity and embracing artificial intelligence must be matched by effective cybersecurity measures and stronger protection of personal data.
