The Federal Government has reaffirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is building a stronger and more inclusive Nigeria through ongoing economic reforms aimed at long-term stability and national development.

Speaking during the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and Chairman of the Interministerial Committee, Senator George Akume, said Nigeria’s democratic journey remains a “major national success story.”

Representing President Tinubu at the event, Akume noted that while recent economic reforms have been challenging, they were necessary to reposition the country’s economy for sustainable growth.

According to him, key policy decisions such as the removal of fuel subsidy and foreign exchange reforms were difficult but essential steps that have created fiscal space for critical investments in infrastructure, education, healthcare, social intervention programmes and broader economic development.

“The policy decisions of this administration were difficult but necessary. They are already creating room for more strategic investments that will benefit Nigerians,” Akume said.

He expressed optimism that as government revenues improve and the economy stabilises, citizens will begin to experience the positive impact of the reforms more significantly.

“As revenues improve and the economy stabilises, Nigerians will increasingly feel the benefits of these reforms,” he added.

The Democracy Day event was attended by top government officials, including the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha; Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev; Minister of State for Regional Development, Uba Maigari; Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga; Special Adviser on Media and Policy Communications, Daniel Bwala; as well as permanent secretaries, agency heads and other dignitaries.

Democracy Day, observed annually on June 12, commemorates Nigeria’s democratic struggle and the sacrifices made in the journey toward civil rule and constitutional governance.
