President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Musa Kida, has praised D’Tigress captain Amy Okonkwo following her signing of a developmental contract with WNBA side Atlanta Dream.
Kida commended the Nigerian forward for her remarkable growth and contributions to basketball, describing her latest achievement as another sign of the rising global recognition of Nigerian talents.
The Atlanta Dream officially announced the signing as part of efforts to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2026 WNBA season.
Okonkwo recently participated in training camp with the Dallas Wings after featuring in eight games for the franchise during the 2025 WNBA season.
The Nigerian star also made history in 2025 by becoming the first undrafted player since 2000 to average more than 10 points while shooting at least 60 percent in her first two WNBA appearances.
As captain of Nigeria’s women’s national basketball team, D’Tigress, Okonkwo led the country to consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket titles in 2023 and 2025.
She was also named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) at both the 2023 and 2025 Women’s AfroBasket tournaments.
Kida further applauded the resilience and fighting spirit consistently displayed by D’Tigress on the continental and global stage, including the team’s historic outing at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The NBBF president said Okonkwo’s achievement would continue to inspire young Nigerian athletes aiming to excel internationally.
