📍Umuahia, Abia State | Media360Impact Report
The Labour Party has elected Senator Nenadi Usman as its National Chairman at its national convention held in Umuahia, Abia State, marking a historic milestone as she becomes the first woman to lead a major political party in Nigeria.

Usman’s emergence follows her earlier appointment as Chairman of the party’s National Caretaker Committee on September 4, 2024, a role she assumed amid internal leadership disputes after the expiration of the previous executive’s tenure.

She successfully navigated the party through a turbulent period, with her leadership affirmed by both the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal in separate rulings earlier in 2026. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had also recognised her position prior to the convention.

A former Minister of Finance and Senator, Usman is widely regarded as an experienced political figure. Her election comes at a crucial time as the Labour Party prepares for the 2027 general elections, following its strong performance in the 2023 polls.

In her acceptance speech, Usman expressed appreciation to party members for their support and pledged to strengthen unity within the party while positioning it for future electoral success.

She also commended Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, for his leadership and support, assuring members of her commitment to peace, reconciliation, and inclusive growth within the party.

Governor Otti, in his remarks, urged the newly elected National Working Committee (NWC) to provide effective leadership and build stronger party structures nationwide.

Other members elected into the NWC include Rt. Hon. Iheanacho Obioma as National Secretary, Mrs. Nike Oriola as Deputy National Chairman, Ken Eluma Asogwa as National Publicity Secretary, Mrs. Oluchi Oparah as National Organising Secretary, Comrade Anslem Eragbe as National Financial Secretary, and Hilda Dokubo as National Women Leader.

The newly elected officials were subsequently sworn in and have officially assumed office.
