Abuja, Nigeria — Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has resigned from his position ahead of the March 31 deadline set for political office holders.

The statement was issued and signed by Alkasim Abdulkadir, Special Assistant on Media and Communications Strategy to Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar.

In his resignation letter, Tuggar expressed profound gratitude to Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the opportunity to serve and contribute to the implementation of the administration’s 4D foreign policy strategy.

He also appreciated the management and staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as members of the diplomatic community, for their cooperation and support throughout his tenure.
During his time in office, Tuggar demonstrated strong leadership in advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives.

His tenure recorded notable achievements, including promoting people-centered diplomacy through humanitarian evacuations, facilitating scholarships, and supporting Nigerians in the diaspora.

He also strengthened diaspora engagement through efforts such as developing a structured Nigerians-in-Diaspora database to enhance national participation. His administration further deepened Nigeria’s bilateral and multilateral relations through strategic engagements with key global partners, particularly across the Global South.

Tuggar’s tenure was also marked by efforts to promote regional security cooperation, including the formation of the Regional Partnership for Democracy (RPD), as well as driving economic diplomacy by positioning Nigeria as an attractive destination for foreign investment, especially in the energy sector.

Additionally, he facilitated diplomatic interventions that led to the release of detained Nigerians abroad, further strengthening bilateral ties.

The resignation letter was submitted to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) before the stipulated deadline. It was received by Abubakar Kana, Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, on behalf of the SGF.
