TMV Applauds UBEC for Releasing ₦100bn in Previously Unaccessed Education Grants

The Tinubu Media Volunteers (TMV) has commended the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) for mobilising and disbursing ₦100 billion in previously unaccessed matching grants to states, describing the initiative as a major boost for basic education in Nigeria.

The group said the intervention came despite the failure of several state governments to provide the required counterpart funding needed to access the grants.

In a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Chukwudi Enekwechi, and Secretary, Segun Ogedengbe, TMV said the development aligns with UBEC’s 2025–2031 Strategic Blueprint, which is designed to improve learning infrastructure and strengthen the country’s basic education system.

According to the group, UBEC Executive Secretary, Aisha Garba, disclosed during a press briefing in Abuja that the commission has recorded notable achievements under the strategic plan.

The achievements include the construction of 4,600 classrooms, renovation of more than 6,100 classrooms, provision of 2,780 toilets, installation of 678 boreholes, and the distribution of 334,000 pieces of school furniture across Nigeria.

TMV described the release of the ₦100 billion as a significant intervention, noting that matching grants are typically accessed only after states contribute 40 per cent counterpart funding. The group observed that many states had been unable to meet this obligation in previous years, resulting in unutilised education funds.

It argued that the decision to release the funds demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to improving access to quality basic education despite the financial constraints faced by some state governments.

The group also said institutional reforms introduced within UBEC have strengthened transparency, project monitoring, accountability, and data-driven decision-making.

TMV further maintained that the commission’s performance reflects broader reforms being implemented by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu across key sectors.

While commending UBEC’s leadership, the group urged the commission to sustain its commitment to transparency, efficient service delivery, and accountable management of public resources.

It added that the release of the previously unaccessed grants underscores the Federal Government’s determination to invest in the education of future generations and improve learning outcomes nationwide.
