ABUJA — The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) and Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) have agreed to coordinate alternative electricity supply arrangements for a planned upgrade of a transmission line in Kano State.
The project involves extending two transmission towers along the Kumbotso–Dan Agundi 132kV transmission line. The proposed work will require a planned outage, with stakeholders exploring ways to divert electricity to alternative substations and maintain supply during the exercise.
The agreement followed a coordination meeting held in Kano on October 5, attended by representatives of TCN, NISO, KEDCO, project contractors and the Kano State Ministry of Works.
The meeting was chaired by the General Manager, Transmission, Kano Region, Engr. M. K. Bello, who said the technical connections and switching arrangements must be thoroughly assessed before the work begins.
Bello expressed confidence in the contractors’ competence but emphasised that safety and grid reliability must remain priorities throughout the operation.
NISO Regional Operations Coordinator, Engr. Kunle Egbedinni, stressed the need to comply with the Grid Code, including the requirement to submit planned outage applications at least 14 days in advance for approval.
KEDCO’s Head of Operations and Maintenance, Engr. Sabiu Haruna, proposed diverting electricity supplied through the Dan Agundi 132kV Substation to other substations within a proposed two-day outage window.
The substations considered for the diversion include Dakata 132kV, Tamburawa 132kV, Rimin Zakara 330kV, Kumbotso 330kV and Wudil 132kV.

During the meeting, participants reviewed network capacity and possible supply routes to determine how electricity demand could be managed during the planned maintenance exercise.
They noted that the Hadejia 132kV Substation could not accommodate the entire 60-megawatt load proposed for diversion. Further assessments were therefore required to determine the available capacity through Tamburawa, Rimin Zakara and Dakata substations.
The agencies also emphasised the need to protect workers and equipment while ensuring that any switching operations comply with technical and regulatory requirements.
The meeting ended with a commitment to strengthen coordination among the participating organisations and ensure the project is carried out safely and in line with applicable regulations.
TCN disclosed the development in a statement signed by its management and dated October 13, 2026.
