ABUJA – The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has called for the urgent completion of the approximately 22-kilometre New Haven–9th Mile 132kV double-circuit transmission line, describing it as critical to the successful commissioning of the 9th Mile 132/33kV Transmission Substation in Enugu State.
The appeal was made by TCN’s Assistant General Manager (Transmission), Enugu Sub-Region, Engr. Jude Madu, during an inspection visit to the facility by the Senator representing Enugu West Senatorial District, Dr. Osita Ngwu, on July 11, 2026.
Speaking during the visit, Madu explained that although the substation was completed by the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) in 2022, it has yet to be commissioned because the transmission line required to evacuate electricity to the facility remains incomplete.
He identified Right-of-Way (RoW) challenges as the major obstacle delaying the completion of the transmission line.
According to him, completing the transmission line is essential for energising and commissioning the substation, which will significantly improve bulk electricity supply to the 9th Mile industrial hub and neighbouring communities in Enugu State.
Madu also called for stronger security measures to protect the facility from vandalism while work on the transmission infrastructure is being completed.
Responding, Senator Ngwu acknowledged the importance of the project and assured TCN of his commitment to addressing the identified Right-of-Way challenges.
The lawmaker also pledged to support efforts aimed at improving security around the facility to safeguard the country’s critical power infrastructure.
The visit ended with a guided tour of the substation’s control room, switchyard and other major installations.
Once completed and commissioned, the 9th Mile Transmission Substation is expected to strengthen electricity transmission capacity, improve power reliability and support industrial and economic activities in Enugu State.
