The Federal Government of Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to peace and stability in Sudan while also strengthening bilateral relations between both countries.

This position was reiterated during a courtesy visit by the Ambassador of the Republic of Sudan to Nigeria, Mohamed Abdelaal, to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, 15 April 2026.

This was contained in a statement signed and issued by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa.

According to the statement, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dunoma Umar Ahmed, stated that Nigeria remains committed to supporting efforts aimed at restoring peace in Sudan. He noted that both countries share longstanding historical, cultural, and diplomatic ties built on centuries of interaction and cooperation.

He emphasised that Nigeria and Sudan continue to maintain strong relations anchored on shared interests in regional peace, security, and development.

The Sudanese envoy, in his remarks, highlighted the deep-rooted connection between both nations, including the presence and integration of Nigerians within Sudanese society. He also provided updates on ongoing developments in Sudan, particularly recovery efforts in areas affected by conflict.

While acknowledging progress in certain regions, the envoy expressed concern over continued external interference, warning that it could prolong instability and worsen regional security challenges.

Both sides stressed the importance of dialogue and negotiation in resolving the crisis, noting that instability in Sudan has broader implications for peace across Africa, especially the Sahel region.
Nigeria reaffirmed its active role within the African Union and the international community in promoting peaceful resolution of conflicts, stressing that sustainable peace can only be achieved through inclusive political processes and constructive engagement.

The meeting also explored opportunities to strengthen bilateral cooperation, including plans to convene the Nigeria Sudan Political Consultations Committee and a proposed high-level visit by Sudanese leadership to Nigeria.
Discussions further covered the protection of Nigerian assets in Sudan and support for citizens affected by the ongoing conflict.

The meeting concluded with both countries reaffirming their commitment to deepening diplomatic relations and working together for peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.
