Prof. Charles Anosike, Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), led a Nigerian delegation to the 5th Network for Education and Research on Peace and Sustainability (NERPS) Conference held from March 4–7, 2026, at the United Nations University (UNU) Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan.

The NERPS 2026 Conference brought together global experts, policymakers and researchers to examine the role of technology in strengthening multilateral cooperation for peace and sustainable development.

The conference opened with a welcome address by Prof. Tshilidzi Marwala, Rector of the United Nations University and United Nations Under-Secretary-General.

Keynote presentations were delivered by Dr. Måns Nilsson, Executive Director of the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), and Rumiko Seya, President of Reach Alternatives (REALs).

During the conference, Prof. Anosike and the NiMet delegation actively participated in several parallel sessions addressing critical global issues including climate action, disaster resilience, climate change mitigation, migration, sustainable agriculture, environmental sustainability, peace, and security.

The sessions also explored urban resilience, equitable climate justice, transboundary resource management, and improved systems for monitoring and predicting environmental changes.

NiMet’s participation facilitated knowledge exchange with international stakeholders and strengthened collaboration on climate science, environmental monitoring and sustainable development initiatives.

The agency’s contributions to discussions on climate governance and resilience strategies also helped reinforce Nigeria’s growing role in global climate and sustainability dialogue.
