The Federal Government has commended Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), also known as Doctors Without Borders, for three decades of humanitarian and medical service to vulnerable communities in Nigeria.
The commendation was contained in a goodwill message delivered on behalf of the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, at an event marking MSF’s 30 years of humanitarian service in Nigeria.
The minister was represented at the occasion by Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu.
Idris acknowledged the organisation’s longstanding contribution to healthcare delivery, particularly its support for people affected by humanitarian crises, displacement, disease outbreaks and limited access to essential medical services.
According to him, MSF’s three decades of work in Nigeria have demonstrated a sustained commitment to reaching people in difficult and underserved communities.
He highlighted the organisation’s contribution to emergency and frontline healthcare, saying its interventions have helped provide lifesaving medical care to vulnerable populations at times when access to quality healthcare is most critical.
The minister also commended MSF for supporting vulnerable groups, including women, children and underserved communities who often face significant barriers to accessing treatment.
He noted that the organisation’s interventions have also provided medical support in situations where local health systems come under pressure, helping to reduce preventable suffering and deaths.
Beyond direct medical care, Idris recognised MSF’s collaboration with communities and healthcare professionals to strengthen local capacity and improve standards of care.
He said such partnerships contribute to building stronger and more resilient communities while reinforcing public confidence in humanitarian action and public health interventions.
The minister described MSF as a dependable partner whose presence has contributed to improved healthcare delivery in communities facing humanitarian and health challenges.
He said the organisation’s work reflects shared values of dignity, equity and service to humanity, which remain important in addressing Nigeria’s healthcare and humanitarian needs.
“On behalf of the ministry and in the spirit of goodwill, I congratulate Médecins Sans Frontières on this milestone,” the minister said.
He expressed hope that the 30th anniversary would renew the organisation’s commitment to serving Nigerians with excellence, courage and compassion.
Idris also expressed the Federal Government’s readiness to strengthen collaboration with MSF to expand access to medical care for more Nigerians who need it.
Médecins Sans Frontières has maintained medical and humanitarian programmes in Nigeria, including interventions supporting vulnerable and crisis-affected populations.
