The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has urged Nigerians to protect national unity and reject hate speech, violence and divisive rhetoric as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.
The Director-General of the agency, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, made the call in his Independence Day message as Nigeria marks its 66th anniversary of independence.
Issa-Onilu described Nigeria’s independence from colonial rule as a defining milestone that gave citizens the opportunity to determine the country’s direction and shape its future.
He said Nigeria had recorded progress since independence despite the challenges it has faced, urging citizens to recognise the gains made while remaining committed to addressing areas requiring further improvement.
According to him, national development cannot be achieved by government alone, stressing that citizens also have responsibilities in building the Nigeria they want.
“We must continue to hold on to the gains of our independence by taking responsibility for the Nigeria we want,” he said.
NOA calls for peaceful 2027 elections
With the 2027 general elections approaching, the NOA Director-General urged Nigerians to respect political differences and resolve disagreements through lawful and democratic channels.
He warned against allowing political competition to weaken the bonds that unite Nigerians, while encouraging issue-based political engagement and respect for divergent views.
Issa-Onilu also called on citizens to reject hate speech and violence and uphold the rule of law before, during and after the elections.
Beyond the independence celebrations and electoral process, he urged Nigerians to contribute to national development through increased productivity, self-reliance, responsible citizenship and peaceful coexistence.
He said every citizen had a role to play in strengthening the country through productive work, respect for national values and positive contributions to their communities.
The NOA Director-General reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to promoting patriotism, national unity and responsible citizenship.
He also said the agency would continue providing citizens with accurate information on government policies and programmes while encouraging constructive participation in national development.
