The Indian High Commission in Nigeria has highlighted the importance of cultural diplomacy in strengthening relations between India and Nigeria, following the celebration of Dandiya Night 2026 in Abuja.
The event, held on October 18 at the High Commission’s chancery premises, brought together members of the Indian community, heads of missions, Nigerian dignitaries and friends of India to celebrate Indian cultural heritage.
Organised in collaboration with the Indian Cultural Association (ICA), Abuja, and the Indian Women Empowerment Association (IWEA), the celebration featured traditional Indian attire, Dandiya dancing and Garba performances associated with the Hindu festival of Navratri.
Speaking at the event, India’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ambassador Abhishek Singh, highlighted the significance of Navratri and commended the two organisations for promoting Indian cultural traditions and encouraging community participation.

Singh also emphasised the contributions of the Indian community in Nigeria, which he said comprises more than 60,000 people, to the country’s economic and social development.
According to him, the Indian diaspora plays an important role in connecting the two countries and strengthening the longstanding relationship between their peoples.
The High Commissioner further stressed the importance of cultural diplomacy and people-to-people exchanges in deepening mutual understanding between India and Nigeria.
He encouraged members of the Indian community to continue showcasing their cultural heritage and welcoming Nigerians to Indian festivals and celebrations.
The gathering provided an opportunity for participants to experience Indian traditions while reinforcing the bonds of friendship between the two countries.
The High Commission said the event reaffirmed the role of the Indian diaspora in promoting cultural understanding and strengthening relations between India and Nigeria.
Beyond the colourful performances and festive atmosphere, Dandiya Night 2026 underscored how cultural celebrations can create opportunities for interaction, foster mutual respect and bring communities from different backgrounds closer together.
