The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has corrected reports surrounding the recent road traffic crash in Kano State, confirming that seven persons lost their lives not 30 as widely circulated in some media reports.
According to the Corps, the casualty figure was established through on-the-spot assessment and verified rescue operations conducted by FRSC personnel at the scene. The agency urged the public and media organisations to rely on officially confirmed information to prevent misinformation and unnecessary public anxiety.

The crash occurred on Sunday, 8 February 2026, at about 8:33 a.m. along Hadejia Road at Kwanar Danja in Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State. It involved a commercial DAF trailer with registration number KTG467YG, reportedly conveying 105 passengers.
FRSC disclosed that 70 victims comprising 55 adult males and 15 male children sustained varying degrees of injuries, while seven adult males were confirmed dead. Thirty other passengers were rescued without injuries by the FRSC emergency response team.
Preliminary investigations by the Corps attributed the crash to speed violation, which led to loss of control.
Reacting to the incident, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, described speeding as one of the deadliest traffic violations, warning motorists against turning highways into “death traps.”

He noted that exceeding prescribed speed limits compromises vehicle control, reduces reaction time, and significantly lowers chances of survival in the event of a crash. “No journey is worth the loss of innocent lives,” he said.
The Corps Marshal added that the scale of casualties recorded in a single crash reflects the severe consequences of reckless driving, stressing that vehicles driven at excessive speed can become lethal within seconds.
He further warned that the FRSC would intensify enforcement operations nationwide, assuring that motorists who violate speed regulations would face the full weight of the law.
The Corps called on all road users, particularly commercial drivers, to obey speed limits, drive responsibly, and prioritise safety over haste.
The statement was signed by Olusegun Ogungbemide, Assistant Corps Marshal and Corps Public Education Officer, FRSC Headquarters, Abuja.
