Security operatives in Anambra State have killed three suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), during an early morning patrol in Nnewi.

The incident occurred around 2:00 a.m. on February 9 along the Nnewi Oba Road near Akaboukwu in the Uruagu area, when a joint patrol team made up of police officers and local vigilantes reportedly encountered armed men barricading the road.

According to security sources, the suspects opened fire on sighting the patrol team, leading to a gun exchange. The operatives returned fire, after which several of the assailants fled into nearby bushes.
Three of the suspects were found dead at the scene, while others were believed to have escaped with gunshot wounds. Firearms were reportedly recovered from the area.

The bodies were evacuated and later confirmed dead by medical personnel before being deposited at a morgue for autopsy and preservation.

The Anambra State Police Command said it would sustain operations aimed at preventing criminal activities and enforcing public safety across the state. It added that security agencies remain committed to protecting residents and maintaining order.
