The Chief of the South African Air Force (SAAF), Lieutenant General Wiseman Simo Mbambo, on Monday, 27 October 2025, met with Nigeria’s Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Vice Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, at the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Headquarters in Abuja to discuss new areas of collaboration aimed at strengthening regional security and air power cooperation across Africa.

The high-level meeting reaffirmed SAAF’s readiness to partner with the NAF in joint training, counter-terrorism operations, and technical exchange programmes. It also underscored the shared commitment of both nations to advancing peace, stability, and defence cooperation on the continent.

Represented by the Chief of Policy and Plans, Air Vice Marshal I. H. Etukudo, the CAS described the visit as “a significant step toward enhancing intra-African air power relations and strategic collaboration.”

Discussions focused on key areas such as technological innovation, logistics and maintenance support, operational synergy, and capacity development. Both parties emphasized the need to strengthen institutional ties between their air forces to address emerging threats and promote sustainable defence capabilities.

In his remarks, Lieutenant General Mbambo commended the Nigerian Air Force for its strides in modernizing its fleet, improving aircraft serviceability, and expanding indigenous maintenance capacity.

He highlighted the importance of African nations investing in homegrown technological solutions to tackle continent-specific challenges, stressing that collective self-reliance was essential for sustainable air power development.

“The growing access of non-state actors to sophisticated military technology presents a shared threat to our nations. This calls for deeper collaboration among African air forces to safeguard the continent’s security and sovereignty,” Mbambo said.

Air Vice Marshal Aneke, through his representative, reiterated the NAF’s commitment to building strategic partnerships with friendly air forces, particularly within Africa, to enhance operational effectiveness, innovation, and training excellence.

He noted that the engagement between NAF and SAAF would further consolidate bilateral ties and reinforce Africa’s collective defence architecture through air power diplomacy, joint operations, and knowledge exchange.

The visit marked another milestone in Nigeria–South Africa defense relations and a renewed push toward a more secure, stable, and united Africa.
