The All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, over his reported claim that he struggled to afford medication for his late mother before her death at the age of 89.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the ruling party questioned how Amaechi could experience such financial difficulties after spending decades in prominent public positions.
The APC expressed condolences to Amaechi over the death of his mother, Dame Ezinne Mary Oduah Amaechi, and prayed for the former governor’s wellbeing.
The party highlighted Amaechi’s previous positions as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Governor of Rivers State and Minister of Transportation.
It argued that his reported financial difficulties were difficult to reconcile with his lengthy career in public office.
The APC also referenced an earlier statement attributed to Amaechi in which he reportedly said he had become financially constrained to the point where his wife was supporting him.
The party interpreted the remarks as evidence that Amaechi had become dependent on public office and questioned his ability to remain financially stable outside government.
The APC further alleged that Amaechi was seeking another political position partly to regain access to public resources.
It particularly criticised his emergence as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general election.

According to the APC, the presidency and other senior public offices should not be viewed as avenues for personal financial survival.
The party said Amaechi’s reported account of his financial circumstances raised questions about his suitability for the vice-presidential position.
The APC concluded by offering prayers for the peaceful repose of Amaechi’s mother and wishing the former governor good health.
Amaechi’s comments and the APC’s response come against the backdrop of growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general election.
