The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued an urgent heat stress alert, warning Nigerians of intensified thermal discomfort in the coming days as temperatures soar across the country.
In its latest advisory released on Tuesday, NiMet cautioned that both daytime and nighttime temperatures are expected to rise significantly, exacerbated by increased atmospheric moisture levels.
Regions at Risk
The heat stress warning particularly affects the North-Central and Eastern states, including Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi, and Cross River, along with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Additionally, Southwestern and coastal regions, as well as parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Plateau, Kaduna, Zamfara, and Sokoto, are also vulnerable to extreme heat conditions.
Health Risks and Safety Measures
NiMet highlighted the health dangers of prolonged exposure to excessive heat, including:
Fatigue and irritability
Reduced cognitive and motor functions
Decreased productivity

To safeguard against heat-related illnesses, NiMet advised residents to take the following precautions:
Regulate Indoor Temperature – Use air conditioners, fans, and cooling systems to stay comfortable.
Stay Hydrated – Drink plenty of water regularly to prevent dehydration.
Avoid Direct Sunlight – Minimize outdoor exposure, especially during peak heat hours.
Wear Light Clothing – Choose breathable, loose-fitting attire to reduce heat absorption.
Limit Strenuous Activities – Reduce outdoor exertion when temperatures are highest.
Stay Safe During the Heat Wave
NiMet reassured Nigerians that adhering to these preventive measures can significantly reduce the risks associated with extreme heat and ensure public safety during this period of elevated temperatures.
