Arsenal are winning again and again, but beyond the seven consecutive victories, another feature of their start to the season is beginning to attract attention: the clean sheets.

The Gunners have won all seven of their official matches since the start of the new campaign, defeating Manchester City, Coventry City, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Napoli, Sunderland and Ipswich Town.

Yet, for a team that has already established itself as one of the strongest defensive sides in English football, the results are telling only part of the story.

Arsenal have kept five clean sheets during the seven-match winning run, conceding just three goals across those matches. The only games in which they failed to shut out their opponents were the 2-1 victory over Chelsea and the 4-2 Carabao Cup win against Ipswich.

When a clean sheet becomes the statement

For Arsenal, keeping the opposition out is becoming almost as important as putting the ball in the net.

A goal can win a match, but a clean sheet can change the entire feel of a game. It limits the opponent’s chances of recovering, reduces pressure on the attack and gives Arsenal greater control when protecting a lead.

That was evident in the 2-0 victory at Sunderland, where goalkeeper David Raya saved a penalty before Bruno Guimarães opened the scoring. Bukayo Saka later sealed the victory from the spot.

A few days earlier, Arsenal also travelled to Naples and returned with a 1-0 Champions League victory over Napoli, another match in which their defensive organisation proved decisive.

Winning is expected; defensive control is becoming the identity

Seven straight victories naturally attract attention, but Arsenal’s defensive consistency is giving the run another dimension.

The Gunners are not simply trying to outscore opponents. They are increasingly showing an ability to control matches, protect advantages and make it difficult for opponents to find a way back into games.

That defensive mentality has been a defining feature of Arsenal under Mikel Arteta. The Premier League also noted that Arsenal’s 2-0 victory at Sunderland maintained their 100 per cent start to their title defence.

And that is why the clean sheet is becoming more than a statistic.

For Arsenal supporters, it represents defensive discipline and control. For opponents, it represents the difficulty of finding a way through a side that can win without needing a goal-filled performance every time.

Seven games, one clear pattern

The numbers tell a simple story:

Seven games. Seven wins. Five clean sheets.

Arsenal have scored 16 goals across those seven victories while conceding only three.

The latest victory, a 4-2 win at Ipswich in the Carabao Cup, showed another side of the team. With several changes to the starting XI, Arsenal still produced enough attacking quality to progress, although conceding twice meant the clean-sheet run was not extended.

The season is still young, and maintaining such consistency over an entire campaign will be a different challenge.

But for now, Arsenal’s early message is clear: the wins are coming, but the clean sheets are becoming part of the identity.
