ABUJA — The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has intensified efforts to integrate sustainability into Nigeria’s telecommunications sector through its Green Telecoms Initiative, aimed at aligning digital infrastructure with global environmental standards while reducing operational costs.

Speaking at a recent Green Conference, the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, represented by Head of Projects Shuaibu Swade, stressed the need for the telecom sector to lead in environmental responsibility alongside its role in driving the digital economy.

According to the Commission, transitioning from diesel-powered generators to renewable energy sources for telecom infrastructure could reduce operating costs by up to 50 per cent, while also significantly cutting carbon emissions.

The initiative also prioritises improved e-waste management, infrastructure sharing among operators, and the deployment of energy-efficient technologies.

The NCC is further advocating for stronger Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) reporting standards to enhance transparency and accountability within the sector. It noted that the adoption of digital solutions, including remote operations and smart technologies, could help minimise emissions linked to travel and energy consumption.

Stakeholders at the conference highlighted that green telecom networks offer dual benefits lower operational costs and improved connectivity, particularly in underserved rural communities.

With this initiative, the NCC is positioning Nigeria’s telecom industry to meet global sustainability benchmarks while strengthening its role in economic growth and climate action.
